Montecito Fire Department: Defensible Space & Safety Inspections

Fire safety is a top priority in Montecito, and the Montecito Fire Department plays a crucial role in keeping our community protected. Each year, the department conducts property inspections, Defensible Space surveys, and permit reviews to help homeowners minimize wildfire risk and ensure compliance with fire safety regulations.

Annual Property Inspections

The Montecito Fire Department performs annual property inspections to assess fire safety conditions. Before inspections begin, residents will receive notification postcards in the mail.

Free Defensible Space Surveys

A well-maintained defensible space can be the difference between a home surviving a wildfire or not. The Montecito Fire Protection District offers free Defensible Space surveys, providing homeowners with expert recommendations on landscaping and building materials that improve fire resistance.

📞 To schedule a survey, call (805) 969-7762.

Permit & Plan Inspections

The fire department also reviews and inspects permit applications for various fire-related concerns, including:
✔ Burn permits – Ensuring compliance with safety requirements
✔ Temporary tent inspections – Required for tents meeting certain size and location criteria
✔ Construction permits & plans – Applicants can track their permit status online and will be notified if adjustments are needed

Fire Safety Tips for Homeowners

✅ Maintain 100 feet of defensible space around your home
✅ Keep grass trimmed to under four inches
