Compass Joins the American Real Estate Association, Expanding Options for Real Estate Agents

Compass International Holdings joined the American Real Estate Association (ARA) on July 28, 2026, giving agents at its company-owned brokerage operations another option for national industry representation. Eligible agents can activate complimentary ARA membership for the remainder of 2026 and all of 2027, while the announcement presents participation as voluntary. The offer comes just months after Compass completed its acquisition of Anywhere Real Estate in January 2026, a deal that brought brands such as Coldwell Banker, Century 21, and Sotheby's International Realty into its expanding portfolio.

The American Real Estate Association Takes Shape

The American Real Estate Association was founded in 2024 by Mauricio Umansky and Jason Haber, positioned as an alternative to the National Association of Realtors (NAR). ARA emerged during a period of significant change across the real estate industry, giving agents a new source of advocacy and professional support as brokerages started asking for more affordable dues and a stronger voice in the policies that shape their daily work.

ARA absorbed the New York Residential Agent Continuum as its first local chapter in January 2025, giving the group an operational foothold in one of the country's most competitive markets. ARA co-founder Jason Haber said the association had reached roughly 30,000 members before Compass joined, while recent relationships with major real estate companies such as RE/MAX have helped expand its presence within the industry.

Compass Opens the Door to ARA

ARA's July 28 announcement makes complimentary membership available to agents at Compass's company-owned brokerage operations for the remainder of 2026 and all of 2027. The offer reaches agents across the company's full brand portfolio, including Sotheby's International Realty, Corcoran, Coldwell Banker, Century 21, Christie's International Real Estate, ERA, Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, and @properties.

Robert Reffkin, Chairman and CEO of Compass International Holdings, framed the decision around competition within the industry. "Competition makes every industry better," Reffkin said, describing ARA as a competitive alternative still working to win over the industry.

ARA's introductory 2026 annual membership fee is $20, while its founding membership costs $1,500 and includes ten years of dues. Agents can register directly through ARA's website, and the choice to continue as a member remains theirs to make even after the complimentary period ends in 2027.

The arrangement applies to agents at company-owned brokerage operations and does not automatically extend to franchise or independently affiliated offices.

What ARA Could Mean for Real Estate Agents

For agents, ARA's arrival reshapes what representation could look like going forward, though how much changes will depend on how much traction the organization builds over time.

The shift could bring several changes:

  • Greater choice: Agents can compare ARA with NAR and decide which organization best aligns with their professional priorities.
  • More competition: A growing alternative could encourage national trade associations to strengthen the value they provide to members.
  • A larger platform for ARA: Compass is making membership available to a large pool of agents across its company-owned brokerage operations, although the opportunity does not mean every eligible agent will become an ARA member.
  • Limited immediate impact for clients: For most clients, the immediate practical effect is likely to be limited because the agreement primarily concerns professional representation at the association level.

For Santa Barbara and Montecito clients, a decision like this sits behind the scenes of the agent relationship rather than in front of it, shaping how agents are supported without changing how a transaction actually runs.
